Anticipating Disruption: transforming weak signals into competitive advantage

Most organizations are caught off guard not because they lack information, but because they fail to connect the dots. The Disruption Wheel is the strategic radar for mapping external forces before they hit your business. Disruptions never travel alone: they move from the margins (weak signals) toward the center, converging and amplifying each other.

This canvas guides you from simple monitoring to strategic design: visualize how a technological shift might collide with a new social trend, creating an unexpected shockwave for your company. Intercept change while it is still "background noise" and prepare to ride it. Don't endure change: intercept it to design futures where your organization can thrive.

The future is not a destiny, it is a consequence. Intercept signal convergence to design tomorrow's resilience today

How to use the Disruption Wheel

Step 1: Define the Target (The Core)

Place your organization (or a specific project/product) at the exact center of the canvas. This is "Ground Zero": the point where all external forces will impact. Being clear about what we are defending (or innovating) is crucial to filtering noise.

Step 2: Scan the horizon (Scanning)

Look beyond your sector. Collect Weak Signals and emerging Trends in macro-areas (Tech, Society, Environment, etc.). Look for anomalies: what is happening at the margins of the market that could become the norm in 5 or 10 years?

Step 3: Map intensity (Time Horizon)

Not all futures arrive at the same speed. Distribute signals on the wheel:
  • Periphery (Long Term): Place weak, uncertain, but potentially revolutionary signals here.
  • Center (Short Term): Place consolidated Trends that are already modifying the present here. Goal: Visualize the "velocity" of change

Step 4: Find convergences (Connecting)

Here is where the magic happens. Stop looking at sectors in silos. What happens if a technological signal (e.g., AI) converges with a new social value (e.g., Privacy)? Where these vectors collide, a Disruption is generated. It is in these intersections that new market futures are hidden.

Step 5: Evaluate impact and design the response (Impact Analysis)

Turn insight into strategy. How do these convergences impact your Core?
  • Threat: Do you need to build defenses to make the business resilient?
  • Opportunity: Can you ride the wave to launch a new business model? Use the map to make decisions that stay ahead of the curve.
