How to use the Futures Wheel canvas
Step 1: Define the triggering signal
Position the trend, event, or emerging technology you want to analyze at the center of the canvas. Be specific: this is the engine of change from which all your future scenarios will branch out.
Step 2: Map direct impacts
What are the immediate consequences? Generate the "first circle" of reactions. Don't limit yourself to the obvious: use the PESTEL lenses (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental, Legal) to cover every "slice" of the problem.
Step 3: Explore systemic consequences
Now go deep. For each direct impact, ask yourself, “So what? What happens next?” Develop indirect (second- or third-level) consequences to reveal risks and opportunities that are still invisible to competitors.
Step 4: Connect and interpret. Visualize complexity
Trace the lines of causality that bind the center to the outer rings. Verifying these connections allows you to validate the scenario's logic and identify the strategic levers on which to act today!
