Futures Wheel

The strategic potential of long-term thinking

The Futures Wheel is a useful collective exercise to visualize the potential future consequences, direct and indirect, of a particular change signal that we perceive today. Using this tool will help you structure, through a speculative approach, a brainstorming session on the possible political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal implications of a signal that is still latent today.

Speculative reflections can help develop multiple concepts about the development of possible futures by offering an informed and coherent perspective

How to use the Futures Wheel canvas

1. First step

Place the term that describes the perceived signal of change you want to analyze in the center of the Futures Wheel canvas.

2. Second step

Reflect and speculate on the possible direct implications of the change at a political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal level.

3. Third step

Reflect and speculate on the possible indirect implications of the change at a political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal level.

3. Fourth step

Visualize the connections between the implications and connect the causes with the resulting changes you have speculated on.
